Birger Sandzén Exhibit
Sven Birger Sandzén (1871-1954), a Swedish-born artist, trained in Paris and participated in its famous fin de siècle milieu. In 1894 he immigrated to the United States and settled in the center of the American prairie in Lindsborg, Kansas where he was invited to become an art professor at Bethany College. Considered a post-Impressionist for his use of color and expressionist in technique, Sandzén vibrant and dynamic paintings of prairie and western landscapes from Kansas to the California coast have been relatively unknown outside the Midwest until recently. In 1908, he made his first trip to Colorado and beginning in 1915 became a regular visitor to Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico. He found the beauty of the Southwest and mountains “… a paradise for the painter.” Exhibiting with the Taos Society of Artists in 1922, he became an associate member at the request of Victor Higgins. During his 54-year career, his style evolved from pointillism to a personal style of bold color with thickly applied masses of paint earning him the title, the “American Van Gogh.”
Since opening in 1957, the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery currently houses the largest collection of his works primarily due to the generosity of the Birger Sandzén Memorial Foundation Collection and the Greenough Trust, established in 1993 by Sandzén’s daughter and son-in-law. The exhibition showcases more than 60 paintings, watercolors and prints from the Gallery and the family trust supplemented by a selection of important Sandzén artworks on loan from private collections. This exhibition will be the first major American exhibition of Sandzén’s artworks outside Kansas.

My Paradise Exhibit at ASI
My Paradise: Finnish and Finnish-American Summer Architecture”
Friday, June 11–Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010
Summer architecture is the focus of this summer’s major exhibit “My Paradise: Finnish and Finnish-American Summer Architecture” at the American Swedish Institute (ASI), on display June 11–October 10, 2010. “My Paradise” is a travelling exhibit of photographs and scale models of twenty Finnish architects’ own summer homes from the past century. Additionally, the work of Duluth-based architect David Salmela, photographed by Peter Bastianelli-Kerze, will add an element of Finnish-American architecture to the display at ASI.
My Paradise features the summer homes of twenty renowned Finnish architects, including Lars Sonck, Eliel Saarinen, Alvar Aalto, and Juhani Pallasmaa, and the structures included span approximately 100 years. The exhibition consists of new photographs by photographer Jari Jetsonen and historic photographs from museums and private collections of architects. The scale models and some new as-built drawings made by the architecture students of the University of Tulane, the University of Tennessee, the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Oregon, bring an important addition to the exhibition, as well as a film by Anssi Blomstedt, “Alvar Aalto’s Journey to the Summer: The Muuratsalo Experimental House.”
In Minneapolis only, “My Paradise” is augmented with the exhibit “With a View of Water,” a display of the work of architect David Salmela, photographed by Peter Bastianelli-Kerze. This exhibit includes models, photographs, and an artist narrative, representing Salmela’s rural and by-the-water works.
The exhibit is included with museum admission: $6, $5 ages 62+, $4 ages 6–18 and students with valid ID. The American Swedish Institute is located at 2600 Park Avenue in Minneapolis. For more information call 612-871-4907 or visit www.americanswedishinst.org.

Nordic Light Exhibit
Nordic Light Exhibit Captures Swedish Landscape
Nordic Light, a collection of 50 paintings and watercolors by Swedish artist Johan Thunberg, opens Friday, Sept. 3, at the Swedish American Museum. The exhibit will run through Sunday, Nov. 28.
Thunberg’s maternal side of the family were painters and sculptors. He began his career in teaching, but now devotes his time solely to painting. His inspiration derives from his upbringing in Oslättfors, a small town on the southeastern coast of Sweden which, according to Thunberg, ―gave me the inspiration for what I do today.‖ His love of nature extends to both the sea and the forest and he sometimes paints the same landscape all year round. This depiction of nature is evident in Nordic Light.
While many artists have depicted nature, Thunberg says he paints it in an individualistic and Swedish way. "The people who look at my paintings see what I see—all the beautiful things that are in nature." The artist explains that his naturalistic and personal style is recognized by viewers, which enhances his passion for painting. "People can see and talk about my paintings in homes and other public places," he says. "I feel that very much in my heart."
Events scheduled for the exhibit are:
Exhibit Opening: Friday, Sept. 3, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Gallery Walk: Saturday, Sept. 4, 11 a.m.
Start with Art, Wednesday, Sept. 8, 7:30 a.m. – 10 a.m.

"Ornamental Joy" (Dekorglädje) Swedish Paintings Exhibit
We are pleased to announce yet another extraordinary art exhibit that will be arriving in September. "Ornamental Joy" or Dekorglädje (literally translated to decoration happiness) will be on display from September 14 to November 14, 2010, and features the work of Swedish artist Alison Aune of Duluth, Minnesota. Alison's work is inspired by Swedish peasant patterns and their botanical symbolism. The Dekorglädje series was created as a tribute to Alison's maternal Swedish forbears and other "artists in aprons." By revising and reinterpreting traditional designs into an exciting contemporary context, Anne pays tribute to contributions made by women to Minnesota-Swedish folk art. The exhibition premiered in 2007 with a display at the Duluth Art Institute.

"Beyond Words: Author Portraits by Carl Köhler" Exhibit
“Beyond Words: Author Portraits by Carl Köhler”
Swedish Artist Carl Kohler 1919-2006
The University of Chicago's Joseph Regenstein Library
September 17 – December 11- 2010
Swedish artist Carl Kohler (1919-2006) a Neo-Modernist/Abstract portraitist; art was born from his own exceptional artistic practices based on personal knowledge and awareness. Kohler’s exuberant lust for life can be felt as much today as it could be when he first created his works. In his art and his unique versatility as a painter, sculptor and designer he was a master. However, of all of the varied arts he endeavoured to experiment and practice in he devoted his attention to the challenging discipline of portraiture. He was not merely satisfied to create an image as others wanted to see it. He strived to maintain independence in thinking, conveying a freshness of individuality, depth with meaning and often a splash of surprise!
Kohler’s knowledge of writers was immense and he was compelled to document his interpretations of each subject in his own unique and intelligent way. He left us with the vibrant and sometimes haunting images of the likes of Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, and Joyce Carol Oates to name a few - literary icons imbedded in the annals of time through the eyes of a celebrated Swedish portrait artist who had the vision to remind us all that these legends of the ‘word’ are still relevant in the 21st century.
30 of Kohler's paintings will be on display.

Intro to Finland Lecture
“Intro to Finland: One Country, Two Religions, Three Languages”
Speaker: Betsey Norgard
Wednesday, Sept. 22— 7 p.m.
At the September ASI Forum lecture, Betsey Norgard will give an illustrated talk, “One Country, Two Religions, Three Languages,” touching on various aspects related to Finland.
Finland’s cultural traditions, reflecting both east and west, stem from its history for hundreds of years under the empires of both Sweden and Russia. From this have come two official languages, Finnish and Swedish, and Sami, a strong minority language spoken in northern Finland, all of which are protected by national language laws. Likewise, while the country is predominantly western Lutheran, the Finnish Orthodox Church is also a state church.
Betsey Norgard is a first generation Swedish-speaking Finn, with family in the Åland Islands. She studied in the Scandinavian Languages and Literature department at the University of Minnesota and spent a Fulbright year in Finland. She has served locally as the coordinator of the Finlandia Foundation Twin Cities Chapter.
ASI Forum, a regular program of the American Swedish Institute, seeks to stimulate discussion about Sweden and Swedish America, both historical and contemporary. ASI Forum presentations are included with museum admission: $6, $5 ages 62+, $4 ages 6–18 and students with ID. Freewill contributions are welcomed for refreshments after the talk. Global Fashion Discussion
A Norwegian fashion designer will discuss the business model that quickly launched his clothing company into global and celebrity markets at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, in California Lutheran University’s Lundring Events Center.
Stefan Dahlkvist’s presentation, “Going Global: From Norway to the U.S.A. and Beyond,” is the first in the 2010-2011 School of Business (Re) Connections at CLU Series.
Dahlkvist and fellow Norwegian fashion designers Peder Borresen and Simen Staalnacke launched their first collection in 2003 and, within six years, opened stores in Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Holland and Japan. This year, they celebrated the first anniversary of their Robertson Boulevard store in Beverly Hills.
As its slogan "Happy Clothes for Happy People Around the World" suggests, Moods of Norway is not your typical clothing store. Moods is well-known for hot pink plaid and flower-patterned suits for men, beautifully designed dresses for women, and fun unisex T-shirts. Celebrities wearing the designs include Gwen Stefani, Adrian Young, The All American Rejects, Muse and ZZ Top.
Dahlkvist will discuss Moods’ creative and somewhat unconventional global business model and explain how it became popular not just in Norway but also in the United States and around the world. Featuring Norwegian waffles and a Moods of Norway fashion show, “Going Global” promises to be a fun and memorable experience.
Lundring Events Center is located in Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center on the north side of Olsen Road near Campus Drive in Thousand Oaks.

Messages in Stone lecture
Messages in Stone: Runes and Runic Inscriptions - Henrik Williams, Ph.D., and Richard Nielsen, Ph.D.
Scandinavian Lecture Series
Sun, Sep 26, 2010 at 2:00pm
Scandinavian experts Henrik Williams and Richard Nielsen will present a new analysis of the Kensington Runestone along with a historical, cultural, social and linguistic perspective on runic writing. They will correct some of the recent sensational claims and unscientific conjecture promoted in the media about the controversial inscriptions found in North America. The two presenters will update information they shared in 2002 at the Nordic Spirit Symposium.
Discovered in Minnesota in 1898, the Kensington stone, with inscriptions dated in the 14th century (post-Viking Age), was once displayed at the Smithsonian Institution. The stone’s authenticity has been questioned since shortly after its discovery.
Williams, one of Scandinavia’s leading runic researchers, teaches and publishes at Uppsala University in Sweden, an international center for runic studies. He is co-editor of the new scholarly journal Futhark: International Journal of Runic Studies. Nielsen, a resident of Houston, has collaborated with Williams since meeting him in Thousand Oaks in 2002. He has researched the Kensington Runestone for the past three decades and recently initiated a 3-D imaging project of that controversial stone.
Admission is free. The program is supported by the American Association for Runic Studies and partially funded by the Swedish Council of America. A post-lecture reception will be held at the Scandinavian Center located at 26 Faculty St., where both presenters will be available for further discussion.
