Exhibit: Luminous Modernism: Scandinavian Art Comes to America, 1912
Tuesday-Sunday, 12-6 pm
Luminous Modernism: Scandinavian Art Comes to America, 1912 provides a retrospective lok at the first exhibition ever sponsored by The American-Scandinavian Foundation. Luminous Modernism features several of the artists and works from the original exhibition, including Edvard Much, Vilheml Hammershøi, and Carl Larsson, but expands upon it by including art from the same period from all five Nordic countries, thereby illustrating the richness of artistic expression throughout the region. It additionally offers insight into a significant, and often overlooked, chapter in the history of North American dialogue with European art, and highlights the importance of Scandinavian art as a model for early modern artists in North America. This is the third of three exhibitions organized in celebration of the ASF's 100th anniversary.

Exhibition: The Enduring Designs of Josef Frank
The Nordic Heritage Museum is pleased to announce a thought-provoking new exhibition: The Enduring Designs of Josef Frank, which opens Friday, December 2 and runs through Sunday, February 19, 2012.
Austrian-born designer and architect Josef Frank (1885 – 1967) is considered a leading pioneer of Swedish Modern design. Unlike the severe approach to modernism taken by many of his contemporaries, Frank emphasized comfort and informality, producing whimsical designs inspired by nature. Frank’s lavish use of bright, bold colors and floral patterns quickly became popular with a host of Swedish designers and clientele, who appreciated this new, more accessible approach to interior design. The Enduring Designs of Josef Frank presents a remarkable array of textiles and furnishings that Frank produced throughout the course of his career, many of which remain in production today.
The Enduring Designs of Josef Frank showcases many of the remarkable textiles and furnishings Frank created for Haus & Garten and Svenskt Tenn. The objects on exhibition include: Primavera, a pattern designed for his home furnishings business in Vienna in the 1920s; an asymmetrical nineteen-drawer cabinet-on-stand designed in 1938 for Svenskt Tenn; and numerous New York-inspired patterns such as Green Birds and US Tree created during his stay in Manhattan in the 1940s.
During the exhibition, the Museum’s Gift Shop will feature a very exclusive selection of Svenskt Tenn merchandise imported from Sweden: everything from beautifully rendered note cards to hand-printed throw pillows made from Josef Frank designs.

Exhibition: Considering Flowers
Honored Rockford artist Karen Vaughn Harding will open a display of several of her watercolor paintings of flowers next month at the Swedish American Museum, 5211 N. Clark Street, Chicago. The exhibition, “Considering Flowers,” may be seen from January 13 until March 11 in the Museum’s first-floor gallery.
Also a horticulturist who in 1984 founded La Paloma Gardens in Rockford, Harding says her artistic creativity is stimulated by the physical structure of flora as intricate representations of the natural world. She cites the War of Roses, the French Fleur-de-Lys and the Crown of Isis as evidence of the importance of flowers in history, symbolism and mythology.
La Paloma Gardens – acclaimed for its great trees and emerald lawns, swans and koi, and dramatic ornamental grasses, flowers and foliage – was a highlight of a recent five-day American Horticultural Society Travel Study Program.
A 2011 and 2010 award winner in the Greenwich Village Art Fair conducted by the Rockford Art Museum, Harding has exhibited her works at the Vida Museum in Sweden, the Des Moines Museum of Art and Rockford College.
She was trained as a historian at Bradley University and later as a medievalist at the Universities of Vienna and Munich. A hobbyist painter in various media, she credits the confluence of her interests with inspiring her bold floral works.

Exhibition: Greta Magnusson Grossman: A Car and Some Shorts
The work of one of the 20th century’s most prolific women designers will make its United States debut in Oklahoma at The Price Tower, a Frank Lloyd Wright designed National Historic Landmark. The Oklahoma premier of Greta Magnusson Grossman: A Car and Some Shorts, a traveling exhibition developed by the Swedish Museum of Architecture, the first-ever to chronicle the career of Swedish-American architect and designer Greta Magnusson Grossman (1906-1999), will be on display from January 20 through May 6, 2012.
The exhibition aims to bring a renewed appreciation throughout the United States for the work of Greta Magnusson Grossman, whose work once published by the U.S. Department of State as a “true picture…of the American way of life,” has now faded into obscurity. Objects on display will include her most iconic and important furniture, lighting design, archival materials and clippings from her press scrapbooks arranged in groupings to tell the story of her design career both in Sweden and in the United States.
Greta Magnusson Grossman, who is considered the matriarch of design in Sweden, began her career in industrial and interior design and architecture in the 1920s. During a career that would span four decades, Greta Magnusson Grossman became the first women to graduate from the Stockholm School of Industrial Design, the first women to be awarded by the Swedish Craft Association for furniture design, the first women to own and operate a furniture studio, and one of the most prolific woman modernist designers of the 20th century.
The exhibition opened at the Swedish Museum of Architecture on February 9, 2010 and was on display until May 16, 2010. After its initial appearance in the United States at Price Tower Arts Center, it will go on to travel to the Pasadena Museum of California Art in October 2012.
